Mango tree/ Aam/ Maanga/Choota/ Mangifea indica/ Anacardiaceae/. — —

Native to Myanmar, Bangladesh and India region. Mango is derived from Tamil ‘man-gay’ and the Portugese adopted it as ‘manga’. The botanical name- Mangifera indica in Latin means ‘ mango bearing plant from India’.
Important herb in the Ayurvedic and Indegenous sysyems of medicine. Parts of the plant are used as antiseptic, astringent, diaphoretic, laxative, and diuretic. Fruit, mango has a prominent place in the traditional Indian design, Indian mythology and is one of the notable motifs used from time immemorial in the Indian sarees . The Mango motif is used as an auspicious design and as a symbol of fertility. Be it the paisley bandanas or the kanjivaram saree from the traditional looms , the Mango motif, has occupied a prominent position.

The mango design is widespread, and one of the most loved designs across the world. Seen in the hands of Lord Ganesha as a symbol of fulfilment. Kamadeva, the God of Love and desire in Indian mythology wields five arrows and one of the arrows is tipped with fragrant mango flowers and causes the person to go crazy under the effect of love.
Mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines. National tree of Bangladesh.
